Shores Cottage is located in Bargain Harbour near Madeira Park, Pender Harbour on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, British Columbia, Canada.

The property is south facing and is situated directly across from the ocean with immediate beach access in front of the cottage.

The cottage has exceptional views of the ocean, you can just sit back and relax watching the boats sail by in the sunshine. The bay holds an incredible array of sea and animal life. In the water you can see the resident seals who seek out the large populations of migrating salmon. Dolphins pass by in the open ocean and are seen quite often by boaters. Last year we saw some incredible sights such as the Orcas entering the harbour. A pod of 6 Orcas entered Bargain Harbour, right in front of the cottage, giving chase to Pacific White sided Dolphins.

Orcas visit Bargain Harbour

April 20th 2012 was an amazing day to have been at Bargain Harbour, 6 Orcas " also known as Killer Whales" entered Bargain Harbour right in front of the cottage. On-lookers reported that the Orcas were giving chase to approximately 100 White Sided Pacific Dolphins, the dolphins took refuge deep into the harbour whilst the Orcas seemed content to wait it out. Early in the game 30 to 40 dolphins managed to escape back out to open water whilst the remaining dolphin stayed deep into the harbour and waited a number of hours until the pod of Orcas finally gave up and slipped back out to sea.

These Orcas are known as 'Transient Orcas' which are known to feed on dophin, where as the 'Resident Orcas" only feed on fish.

Orcas can be seen quite often cruising through the local waters of Pender Harbour.

About 320 individually identified transient orcas are commonly seen along the coastline of Washington and British Columbia and from Southeast Alaska to California. These transient communities haven't all been photographed. (Photo - courtesy of Harbour Spiel Magazine - Pender Harbour BC)

Transient killer whale pods are generally comprised of an adult female and two or three of her offspring. Among the differences between residents and transients are that while resident orcas of both sexes stay within shouting distance of their mothers their entire lives, only first-born male transients maintain such intense fidelity to their mothers. Optimum pod size for transients is three, so whenever a third offspring is born, one of the siblings often leaves. The rule seems to be that the eldest son can stay, but all but one of the others may have to go.

After departing their mother's company, roving males may join up with other groups from time to time. Females are more likely to join up with other transients, at least for a time. It isn't known if the hosts are relatives. Departing offspring, whether male or female, tend to leave their mother at 5 to 12 years of age.

The location of Bargain Harbour also benefits from it's close proximity to Madeira Park which has local shops and main marina.

The marina is a great place to watch the small fishing boats returning from a days fishing and is a place where you can buy fresh fish, crabs & prawns straight off the boats.

The area is surrounded by beautiful lakes such as Katherine Lake, Sakinaw Lake, Hotel Lake and the popular Ruby Lake which is approx 10 minute drive away, you can hire canoes and there is a great swimming area with a sandy beach at Dan Bosch Park where the water is warm and crystal clear.

The area offers golfing, hiking, incredible ocean fishing, canoe/kayak/boat rentals, restaurants, swimming and much more. Various Guided tours are available - see information links on this site.
